  • According to data from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer.
  • This strictly looks at June 2021. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung is still at the top of the list.
  • Even if Xiaomi can’t hold the top spot, this proves that it can overthrow Samsung forever.

A few weeks ago, we told you that there were reports that Xiaomi surpassed Apple to become the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer. These results reflect the analysis of the second quarter of 2021.

We need to wait and see what the company will do in the third quarter of 2021. By the end of the quarter’s analysis, Samsung is still likely to maintain its leading position. In any case, Counterpoint’s analysis (and other companies’ analysis) proves that Xiaomi is definitely a threat to Samsung’s market dominance.

The past year was indeed a perfect storm for Xiaomi. Samsung’s smartphone business slowed down, Huawei was basically absent, and LG completely withdrew. This leaves room for some significant growth for Xiaomi, and it clearly did.

However, it will take some time for Xiaomi to truly overthrow Samsung. The company needs to be the market leader throughout the quarter and needs to stay in this position for several quarters before anyone can confidently claim that it is a true leader. Even now, the top-level competition is so fierce that neither company can achieve a strong lead.

Maybe Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone will turn the situation around to its advantage? Or, when Xiaomi launches a more affordable phone, it might gain more momentum? We can’t wait to see how it turns out.
