Smart phones have replaced cameras in daily use for most purposes. However, unlike cameras, they are not equipped with a tripod stand or any really good way to fix them in a fixed position. [Mrballeng] Built an excellent mount, However, it uses cables to fix smartphones in various locations for photography or other purposes.
The mount relies on vinyl-coated steel cables. Four blocks made of resin 3D printed are slotted in this cable. These blocks are also equipped with powerful magnets. Due to the magnetic attraction to the steel core, this allows them to be positioned along the vinyl cable while holding themselves in place. These blocks can also be used to connect cables to magnetic objects such as drywall screws or lamps.
Using the stand is very simple. The cable is wrapped around the phone and tightened with a block to hold it in place. The magnets in the block can then be used to secure the phone to a wall or other surface.
This is a neat build, and if we have one, we can imagine using it often. Of course, there is no reason why you can’t produce parts on the more common filament-based printers. We have also seen some other great smartphone photography tips, such as this mod, which allows you to use your phone as a microscope for less than $10. Video after the break.
