There are many uses for installing a custom ROM on an Android phone. ROM can provide more functions than the software installed by default on the phone. If you are using an aging device with minimal or no software support, using the current ROM may be indispensable. Or, you may just desire something different.
However, based on reader opinions obtained in our recent polls, most of our readers never care or no longer care about any of these things. See the results below.
Are you using a custom ROM on your Android device?

This is a very popular opinion poll, with more than 7,000 responses on our website, and more responses on Twitter and YouTube. These three platforms also produced some very different results.
Let’s start with our website. Currently, less than 35% of readers use ROM on their devices. 39.1% admitted that they “used” but no longer. In the end, slightly more than a quarter of voters stated that they have never used a custom ROM at all. It is worth noting that this means that nearly three-quarters of Android Authority readers have played ROM at some point.
On Twitter, we saw less than 5,000 votes. The majority of voters on the platform (38%) have never tried ROMs, and 16.6% are currently using them to run devices. This makes more than 45% of voters abandon the ROM, which has been tried in the past.
Finally, we come to YouTube. Most of our viewers (46%) admit that they have never tried a custom ROM at all. 40% have tried it in the past, and 14% are currently running a custom ROM. This stems from more than 16,000 votes.
In short, the vast majority of our readers seem to have dabbled in custom ROMs, but it is no longer due to software improvements, Google’s new security features, or general troubles. More than one-fifth of readers are still using custom ROMs.
Your comment
- Inversion: No longer because most applications, especially financial applications, will not run (thanks to SafetyNet).
- Bonimi: I have often installed custom ROMs in my old devices for the past 10 years, but now I don’t think the same is needed anymore. Most OEM ROMs are customizable, and android has matured in many ways.
- San branoi: I use them mainly because I want monthly security patches and a clean user interface, without the bloated software of the hardware of my choice.
- Ruado: I used to be a fanatical person in the past. But now the bootloader can be locked tightly, and then the financial application will not run (for good reason). As I get older, safety becomes more and more important to me? I don’t want to go into the software content of the mobile phone like that anymore. However, this is an interesting hobby.
- Syrah: I only use them after the OEM has given up support for my device.
- Keene: I use custom ROM for devices that OEM gave up support, it can extend the life of the phone for many years, especially if LineageOS officially supports the device.
- Aqiu Aqiong: Custom ROMs are like a necessity to me, because I hate the way OEMs need to update their phones forever, and some custom ROMs provide a cleaner, ad-free native Android experience.
- YT Cast List: I don’t root them because they look too complicated, but I like OnePlus 8T very much, and I think I will try rooting it to keep the operating system updated.
- Arun Uda Akuma: A custom ROM is used on every android phone I own.
