Giant CNC machine measuring a whole cubic meter

Posted on August 8, 2021 by William

There are many designs for desktop 3D printers, engraving machines and general CNC machines. However, if you want to build big things and build them quickly, sometimes you need a machine that can handle larger jobs. This huge 1x1x1 meter 5-axis CNC machine comes from [Brian Brocken] Absolutely meet the requirements.

The construction relies on 3D printed components and aluminum tubes so that anyone can assemble them together. [Brian] Note that 25 x 25 mm pipes with a wall thickness of 2 mm work well, but those who aim to minimize deflection are best upgraded to 5 mm thick. The size of the stepper motor is NEMA 23, but a pair of NEMA 17 is used for the Y axis. This is necessary to handle huge machine sizes. The control is attributed to the Arduino Mega equipped with RAMPS board, running Marlin firmware.

The plan is to use this machine to test various CNC machining technologies. It can make an oversized 3D printer and should be able to handle basic 5-axis milling of some very soft materials (such as foam). On the surface, this may seem silly, but it is very useful for mold making tasks.

We have also seen huge CNC routers before, and they can easily be fully utilized. Video after the break.
