- Google confirmed that Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 have been discontinued.
- Both phones will be sold through official channels, while stocks last.
- Pixel 4a and the new Pixel 5a will become Google’s affordable options in 2021.
Soon after the Google Pixel 5a was launched, sharp-eyed netizens quickly noticed that the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 seemed to be out of stock at the Google Store and other retailers. All signs indicate that these two phones have been discontinued, and today, Google confirmed that this is indeed the case.Google spokesperson confirmed digital trend Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 will only be sold until the current inventory is sold out.
It definitely makes sense for Google to stop these phones. The 4a 5G is very similar to the new Pixel 5a, and any differences are biased towards the latter. Pixel 5a is equipped with a better structure, larger battery, better performance despite having the same handling package, and has an IP rating for dust and water resistance. And it is also cheaper.
As far as Pixel 5 is concerned, it is surprising that Google’s 2020 flagship product does not offer more. You will get the same processor, the same camera and similar construction. In fact, Pixel 5a has a larger battery and headphone jack. The only significant difference is that Pixel 5 is equipped with a display with wireless charging and a 90Hz refresh rate. This is certainly not enough to justify the significant price difference.
However, availability may be the problem. It looks like Google will stop using Pixel 4a 5G and 5 in every market where these phones are available. However, Pixel 5a is only available in the United States and Japan. The older, smaller Pixel 4a will be the only affordable Pixel you can buy in most places. Of course, if you are willing to splurge, the upcoming Pixel 6 series will also become very attractive.
Google Pixel 5a is currently available pre order, General sales will start on August 26.
