Google Pixel 5a finally officially launched, it is positioned as a cheaper successor to Pixel 4a 5G, rather than a successor to Pixel 4a equipped with 4G. Google took a similar approach to Pixel 4a last year, cutting the price by $50 compared to Pixel 3a.
Is the new mid-ranger a hot device or do you think Google scored an own goal? You can vote in our poll below, if you have more ideas, please leave a comment.
The Pixel 5a starts at $449 and has a lot in common with the Pixel 4a 5G, for better or worse. We have the same Snapdragon 765G chipset, dual rear camera system (12MP main camera, 16MP ultra-wide angle) and a similar 60Hz OLED screen. Therefore, you do not see a huge upgrade at first glance.
However, the new phone does include some welcome upgrades in other categories. There is a 4,680mAh battery, a massive upgrade to the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 (although with 18W charging and no wireless charging), and an IP67 rating, which provides better durability. You will also get a metal backplate, which seems to be the material of choice for many readers. Coupled with the price reduction of its predecessor, you get a very reliable packaging.
