Here are your thoughts on the names of Android public desserts

Posted on August 6, 2021 by William

For several years, Google has not publicly used the dessert name for the new Android version, but chose the numbered version starting from Android 10. But the company still uses the name of the dessert internally, and Android 12 is called Snow Cone.

Last week’s news pointed out that Android 13 is called Tiramisu internally at Google, but we want to know if readers want the public-facing dessert name to make a comeback. The following is how you voted in this poll.

Would you like to see Android re-use public dessert names?

The poll was released on July 27, and more than 3,500 votes were counted as of this writing. The winner here is the “yes” camp, who won more than 86% of the votes or nodded more than 3,100 times. The reason is also easy to understand, because the names of desserts run counter to the naming conventions used by Windows and iOS, etc.

Since the early days of Android, the public dessert name has existed and can be traced back to Android 1.5 Cupcake. So we can understand the desire to continue this convention. In addition, Google still uses dessert names internally, so the search giant does not have to retrospectively provide dessert names for its recent Android version.

Nevertheless, more than 13% of the readers interviewed stated that they do not want to see the dessert name return publicly. Some comments indicate that the current numbering system is “cleaner” or that Google is growing. A reader also believes that Google should indeed insist on using code names, but choose something other than dessert.

Comment

  • Adi Buyono: I kind of miss the name of Android dessert. It makes Android sound unique, and of course it is very sweet~
  • CR45H 0V3RR1D3: For a while I thought they were cute. Nowadays, from many perspectives, it seems more concise to use only one number.
  • Rabies: I thought it was cute before, now it’s time for Google to grow up
  • Brian Bergstrom: Anyway, I still use their dessert names to call them. All of this is because pie is a delicacy in some parts of the world, not a dessert.
  • Windows98 gamers: We need the public dessert name again! ! ! Calling them by number will only make Android look more like iDroid imo
  • Sesper: Actually not, but they should stick to the codename to make it more unique than iOS, but they should now use something different from candy to make it feel fresh.
Where is it? Such as Memphis, Chicago or Nevada. Or other cities in other countries? They should keep the code names, not just call them numbers.

Thank you for voting and commenting in this poll. What do you think Google should do after reaching Android’Z’?
