  • Today introduced the new OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro XPan features.
  • The camera mode reproduces the iconic Hasselblad XPan experience, including viewfinder haze and a 65:24 aspect ratio.
  • The image is cropped, but you can use two focal lengths connected to the main lens or ultra-wide-angle lens.

One of the biggest news related to the OnePlus 9 series is the company’s partnership with Hasselblad. Non-photographers may not know this brand, but it is one of the most prestigious and legendary companies in the history of photography.

At first, the Hasselblad partnership only focused on the color accuracy of the OnePlus 9 series. However, now with the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro XPan features, one of Hasselblad’s most iconic cameras can be brought to smartphones.

The new features appear in the Oxygen OS 11.2.9.9 update for 9 and 9 Pro (sorry, OnePlus 9R users, but this is not for you). The update will roll out today, but as always, it may take a while to land on your phone.

Once you have it, just launch the default camera application. Swipe up to display an expanded list of camera modes, and then tap “XPAN”. This will activate the OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro XPan mode, and you can start shooting!

Check out some examples below, and then continue to get some basic details on how XPan mode works.

The original XPan camera was designed to provide a unique panoramic shooting mode for traditional 35mm film. There is no need to change the film, you can change to the panorama mode and shoot images with a very unique 65:24 aspect ratio. Instead, you can switch back and grab traditional 4:3 images, all of which use one camera.

With OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro XPan mode, the focus is all on the 65:24 image. The viewfinder reproduces the “haze” on the edges that you would see when viewing through XPan. There are also some switches on the screen: switching from 30mm or 45mm focal length, switching from black and white or color shooting, and an exposure dial.

When the image is captured, an animation appears, duplicating the film negative. This is a good little touch.

If shooting at a focal length of 30mm, use an ultra-wide-angle lens to shoot 12MP images. The 45mm focal length also uses a 12MP main lens. This will create images with a resolution of 7,552 x 2,798 and 7,872 x 2,916, respectively.

Obviously, the system just merges pixels and crops the image. However, due to the use of 48MP and 20MP lenses, it can still create clear photos.

Although this new feature is unlikely to be a deciding factor in the purchase of OnePlus 9, it is a great technique for those who already have it or are excited about the potential of the Hasselblad partnership.
