Over-designing smart doorbells | Hacker Day

Posted on September 13, 2021 by William

The Newline hacker conference organized by Hackerspace Gent brings you the glory of the Middle Ages in Ghent, Belgium. [Victor Sonck] Working on the top floor of his house, he needs a doorbell notifier. His solution was unexpected, as he admitted to over-engineering, Use machine learning on the audio stream from the microphone to detect the sound of the doorbell.

After determining that using the Ring doorbell to sell his soul to Amazon was not an appropriate solution, he next checked his existing doorbell. Some of us may be directly connected to its ability to perceive when a button is pressed, but we are happy that he has chosen an over-engineered route because it means we are seen as a rundown of how machine learning works and how to apply it. To audio. The end result can sometimes be triggered by the spoon hitting the cereal plate, but since he can prove it works, we think it can be called a success. If you want to go further, you can find more In his GitHub repository.

How would you overdesign the doorbell? Use GNU radio and filters? Or maybe a Rube Goldberg machine involving ropes and pulleys? As always, comments are open.
