After months of leaks and teasing by Samsung, the company’s next-generation foldable product has finally come out. Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, which are the follow-up products of the foldable phone series in its defined category. These two devices are better than their predecessors in more than one respect. They not only have the latest specifications and functions, but also have a more powerful and user-friendly exquisite design.
Read on for our first-hand experience of Samsung’s new foldable phone.
Galaxy Z Fold 3: The charm of the third time?
Eric Zeman/Android Authority
The first generation of Galaxy Fold is obviously a prototype design. It represents a technical experiment-one involving foldable displays-with consumers as experimental subjects to see if this form factor is feasible. After a series of delays, it finally did it, or at least enough for Samsung to stick to it. Galaxy Z Fold 2 is better than the original version by leaps and bounds, and it feels better to encapsulate what a folding phone should be. However, its price is still too high, designating a fold for wealthy buyers who wish to make a statement.

Now that we have launched Samsung’s third-generation foldable phone, it is clear that the company has found its own thing. In the short time we have used the Galaxy Z Fold 3, we are well aware that Samsung has made great strides in combining high technology with high design. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a sturdy hardware that impresses people at first glance.

The first thing you will notice is the firmer feel of the phone. The metal frame and Corning Victus glass mean business and create a strong first impression when you pick up the phone. Galaxy Z Fold 3 may be slightly trimmed than its predecessor, but it is still a big piece of equipment. When closed, it is tall and narrow, but very thick. When opened, it is tall and wide, but thinner. It is not a phone for the faint-hearted.
Samsung has made great strides in combining high technology with high design.
Especially the hinge, it has a smoother feel. Early foldable phones may make you lack confidence in the hinge mechanism, while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 provides clean, smooth motion, sturdiness and sturdiness. Samsung’s ability to pass the IPX8 waterproof certification further supports this to a certain extent, which means that the phone is sealed. Everything about Z Fold 3 inspires more confidence in its quality.
The new external display is great. Its size is 6.2 inches, the resolution is better than HD, and it is more practical than the narrow screen of the original Galaxy Fold. I found the panel to be bright and colorful, and easy to use for everyday smartphone tasks, although reaching the top with the thumb is a stretch.

Of course, you bought the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for the huge 7.6-inch internal screen. The smooth motion of the hinge makes it a pleasure to open to access that large display. It looks great. The resolution and brightness of Super AMOLED are top-notch. You will still experience slight bumps at the seams where the screen is actually folded, but you can barely see it when you use the phone. My favorite feature? Improve the durability of the protective film. The Z Fold 3 display does not feel as fragile as its predecessors, which is a huge benefit.
The controls, ports and other aspects of Galaxy Z Fold 3 meet the requirements of modern flagship products. You have USB-C, stereo speakers but no headphone jack, a power button and a volume rocker. During the time I spent on the phone, they all worked as expected. You will notice the SIM tray and 5G antenna module (when opened) on the left side of the phone.
There is no doubt that Samsung’s software feels and looks fast on the phone, thanks to the generous help of RAM (12GB) and the lively Snapdragon 888 processor. We have not conducted any tests, but we hope that this phone can play the best performance.
Regrettably, the price of this phone is still high ($1,800), but we will reserve the final judgment for a full review, which will be released in the next few days.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3
The first foldable product with IP waterproof rating.
Samsung’s latest foldable flagship product looks a lot like the 2020 model, but has some new design elements and some better specifications. It also has an IPX8 rating and supports the use of S Pen, all of which have lower entry prices than previous years.
Galaxy Z Flip 3: Affordable foldable phone
Eric Zeman/Android Authority
The smaller Galaxy Z Flip 3 is as strong and eye-catching as its larger counterparts. Galaxy Z Fold 3 is designed to provide you with a tablet experience in your pocket, while Galaxy Z Flip 3 is designed to make your phone more portable. It uses a standard tablet phone and folds it in half at the waist to reduce the overall footprint and achieve ultimate portability. Has it achieved this goal? It is true.
I think the original Galaxy Z Flip is a bit fragile. It definitely feels a bit fragile, just like the first Galaxy Fold. Especially the shell, it feels very thin and has no protective effect. The good news is that Samsung has equipped the Z Flip 3 with the same metal and glass construction as the Galaxy Z Fold 3-compared with previous generations, the improvement is significant. Combined with a more refined hinge, there is no doubt that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a more powerful phone that can better deal with the challenges of daily use. It also provides a waterproof rating for IPX8, which greatly increases the service life of the phone.

Perhaps one of the other biggest improvements is the new external display. The first two generations of Galaxy Z Flip have a single-line screen that can be used to check some basic functions such as time and notifications, while the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a larger screen. The 1.9-inch AMOLED external screen supports music control and other small parts for quick and easy interaction. The idea is to let you do more things without forcing you to turn on your phone. It brings a huge original feature enhancement to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, although it is not exactly the same as the Motorola Razr’s external display. In the time we spend on our phones, the external screen looks good.
In addition to improving durability, one of the biggest improvements is the new external display.
Inside you will find an impressive 6.7-inch AMOLED internal screen, operating frequency is 120Hz. The sample at hand shows a bright screen rich in pixels and smooth. I am particularly satisfied with the brightness, and my eyes look improved compared to the original Z Flip. You will notice the seam in the middle of the screen, although it is not as obvious as the seams in the old Flip series phones. Like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is equipped with a new protective case that can withstand more abuse and feels stronger. In the past few years, Samsung’s foldable screen technology has made great strides.
Galaxy Z Flip 3 has almost the same port and control options as Galaxy Z Fold 3. This means the power and volume buttons on the right edge, the SIM tray on the left edge, and the USB-C tucked into the bottom edge.
I like the custom software provided on my phone. Samsung makes full use of Flip’s split-screen potential, when the phone is half-folded, the camera control in the lower half of the screen and other functions. The important thing is the little things.
Eric Zeman/Android Authority
Perhaps the most impressive feature of this phone? price. The original Z Flip is priced at 1,400 US dollars, and this new foldable product is only 999 US dollars. This is a huge price cut and significantly improves the value equation. Of course, we will soon provide our full accounting of the value of mobile phones in a comprehensive review.
