That’s why we don’t see more PC and console games ported to Shield TV

  • Nvidia revealed why we can’t see more PC or console games ported to Shield devices.
  • The graphics company said it is now focusing on transferring games via local ports.
  • This is not surprising, but it still confirms why we did not see the new port.

One of the most notable features of the Nvidia Shield TV box is the ability to play many exclusive games ported from a PC or console. These games include Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, Tomb Raider and Half-Life 2. Unfortunately, it has been a long time since we last saw the new port of Nvidia’s Android TV series.

Now, Nvidia revealed why this happened, telling Android Authority It prioritizes “streaming media, we can now bring full-featured, high-resolution PC games to Shield users, rather than porting.”

The graphics giant does offer the Geforce Now service, which allows users to transfer more than 1,000 PC games from the cloud to their Shield device (and other platforms). Nevertheless, Nvidia said it will not give up the previously released port anytime soon.

“Shield continues to support games launched on the Google Play store for more game options,” Nvidia pointed out in an email response. “And Shield TV Pro supports Nvidia Share, allowing gamers to stream their games directly to twitch.tv.”

This reason is not surprising, because the local port of an Android-based Shield device usually requires more time, resources, and effort than simply adding the same game to Geforce Now. In addition, this downturn in the port coincides with the rise of its streaming media work. But one disadvantage of this method is that Shield TV users who live in areas with poor Internet connectivity or Geforce Now cannot simply switch to Nvidia’s game streaming option.

Compared to Shield devices, do you prefer Geforce Now or more local ports for PC or console games? Tell us through the polls below.
