  • Google is rolling out the August 2021 Android security patch to Google Pixel devices.
  • There is only one feature fix, but it is an important feature to prevent accidental use of Google Assistant.
  • It is rolling out to Pixel 3 and newer devices.

There is only one general fix in the August security update. However, you might appreciate it. Google solved a “problem” of accidentally calling Google Assistant. The tech company didn’t elaborate on what it was, but if you are tired of the assistant interjecting when you don’t need its help, it may be welcomed. Security fixes are mainly for moderate defects in NFC (for pixels) and Qualcomm closed source components.

Android Security Update in August 2021
The modest security upgrade in August is not surprising. Android 11 and the latest Pixel phones are relatively mature, and Google is close to completing Android 12. The focus is no longer to polish existing products, but to prepare for the future, including the upcoming Pixel 6 series.

If you decide to upgrade immediately, you don’t have to sit still. You can manually install the August security updates by downloading the relevant factory or OTA images below. If you don’t have a Pixel, you should get an equivalent update (minus Pixel-specific fixes) in the next few days.
