As for the input device, the potentiometer is very simple: turn left, turn right, and you’ve seen almost everything. For many applications, this is what you need, but we can certainly improve the experience of using modern technology. Enter this promising project of [upir] to pair ordinary potentiometers with cheap OLED displays to obtain a more attractive user experience.
In order to save time, the code is fine tuned in the simulator.
The basic idea is to install the display on the potentiometer knob in order to display useful information, such as the label showing its function and the reading of the current detection value. But you may also want to show where the knob is currently set within the range of possible values, which is interesting.
In the video after the break, [upir] spent a lot of time explaining the math behind details such as scrolling marks. This nearly 45 minute video was finally optimized because it requires some extra effort to move the display with the knob in real time on Arduino UNO. The end result looks great and is expected to be a relatively cheap way to add a bit of elegance and practical talent to the original basic knob.
With this code and this extensive demonstration, adding similar features to the next gadget equipped with a knob should not be a big challenge.
