The new 90-day limit was discovered in the latest Android version of WhatsApp beta, the version number is 2.21.9.6. Turning it on will cause the message to disappear after only three months. It’s more or less like the message is archived to be automatically deleted after three months.

The original goal of WhatsApp was to reassure users that the conversation is not permanent. With the 90-day limit, it seems that users can not only keep conversations, but also forget them when appropriate.

Nevertheless, at least the service has a “view once” option for photos and videos. Although, even this is not completely foolproof, because it does not restrict the recipient from taking screenshots or saving the media elsewhere, just like disappearing messages.
