Whether you are manufacturing, repairing or hacking together, we all need fasteners. Screws, nuts and bolts, and popular rivets are sometimes convenient. Various resins and even hot glues are equally useful. However, in some cases, we cannot find the right fasteners for this job, and we need to find another way.
[Robert Murray Smith] I found myself in such a position. His goal is to connect two pieces of aluminum, both sides need good surface treatment. Glue, popular rivets, screws, nuts or bolts are not suitable. [Robert] Always full of new and old ideas, he resorted to using old school fasteners, as explained in his video”How to make and use rivets“.
In the video below the break, [Robert] It explains in detail how to make a simple rivet mold from 5 mm (3/16 inch) flat steel, use brass rods to make rivets, and then use flat-head rivets to connect two pieces of aluminum. The simple tools he uses allow anyone with a propane torch, vise, some basic tools, and a simple claw hammer to use the technique. We also appreciate [Robert]Discussion of cold riveting, hot riveting and annealing the rivets as needed.
Riveting is not only a technology that has a history of thousands of years, but its progress and application during the industrial revolution made it impossible for other technologies to exist.Hakadi’s own [Jenny List] Wrote a wonderful article about rivets in 2018, you will not want to miss it!
