  • A hacker has ported all Google Maps to the modified Nintendo Entertainment System.
  • The final product is an 8-bit world map.
  • The hackers used several other NES/map mods as starting points.

Remember that Google used to have April Fools’ Day jokes every year? One of the jokes is to announce An 8-bit version of Google Maps You can use it on the Nintendo Entertainment System (as early as 2012). Funny joke, right?

Obviously, this NES is not your standard issued fare. It was connected to the Internet (it was almost non-existent when the NES reached its peak) and there were several other modules. But it does present Google Maps in an 8-bit design, making our world look like Dragon Quest or something from the first Final Fantasy.

In the video mirrored above, you can see how hackers put them together. They have a lot of inspiration, including a performance Similar feat using Bing The other brought the original Doom of the NESFinally, they used the NES controller to travel through our world, which is great.
