Microsoft announced Wednesday that it will launch a new research program aimed at combating climate change. The Microsoft Climate Research Initiative (MCRI) aims to take advantage of the research and computing expertise of this technology giant when working with academic institutions.
MCRI will feature an interdisciplinary community of researchers working in fields other than traditional computer science, such as environmental science, chemistry, and various engineering disciplines.
First of all, Microsoft said that it would focus on three key areas of climate research. In these three areas, the progress of computing technology can promote key scientific changes: overcoming the limitation of decarbonization, reducing the uncertainty in carbon accounting, and assessing climate risks in more detail.
The first phase of cooperation is listed on the MCRI website.
Microsoft has taken a series of environmental protection measures and set the goal of achieving negative carbon emissions by 2030.
